Enchanted/Disenchanted

Core workshops

We had a core workshop – Enchanted/Disenchanted.  Matthew  gave a fascinating  talk that he’d given earlier in the year at an international conference in Greece on semiotics and visual communication. It was a 14 episode thought-provoking talk that put to light the history and the unfolding of capitalism, advertising and semiotics. He started with the poem ‘The Venus Noire’ by Charles Baudelaire, a leading poet and art critic of the 19th Century. A strong start which lead us through a fascinating journey to the present day….

We then had a session with Michelle based on moving image, sound and text. We were using After Effects and as a complete novice was completely lost. I didn’t finish the session as I just felt lost and had no idea what were we were doing and was hindering the rest of the class.

A great core session and so interesting to see how the world has evolved into a super capitalist state. As India and China catch up with the West in their race to be on top of the capitalist ladder, it looks like the next generation are shunning the fast ‘spend spend spend’ culture and looking back to the simpler life of playing musical instruments and art……or at least I hope so!
